The Tips to Help Save Your Teeth after a Bike Crash

Your Smile Is Our Priority

Ready to Make an Appointment?

A bicycle accident can result in more than a scraped knee. Even when you are wearing all of the appropriate safety gear, your teeth are still vulnerable to injury. If they become chipped, cracked, or even knocked out due to the accident, it is still possible to save the tooth if you act quickly.

In order to ensure your teeth are given the proper care and opportunity to survive your bike crash, the team at Journal Square Dental has put together a guide on ways to help preserve the tooth as you make your way over to our office for help. Our team of dental professionals has proudly served our local community for a quarter of a century and would love the opportunity to do the same for you today.

Tips to Help Save an Avulsed Tooth

When a tooth is knocked out, also known as avulsed, immediate and gentle care is essential due to the damage to nerves, blood vessels, and tissues. To manage bleeding, apply gentle pressure with a wet cloth or paper towel. Handle the dislodged tooth carefully, avoiding the root; instead, hold it by the crown and rinse it lightly without scrubbing.

It’s crucial to keep the tooth moist. If possible, reinsert it into its socket, ensuring correct orientation and alignment. Alternatively, store it in your mouth between your gum and cheek, or in a container with saliva, milk, or water. Speed is key—visit your dentist promptly, ideally within an hour, for the best chance of successful re-implantation. If you have suffered a chipped or cracked tooth, time is still of the essence but not quite as urgent. For best results, it is still recommended you reach out to your dentist as quickly as possible.

How Your Dentist Can Help After a Bike Crash

If you have chipped or lost your tooth after a bike crash, Journal Square Dental is here to help. With our knowledgeable team and speedy services, we will begin by immediately assessing the situation and devising a unique plan of action. From here, we may perform a variety of procedures depending on the specifics of your accident and the status of your tooth.

If it was kept well preserved and has not suffered any cracks or chips, it is likely we will be able to insert it back into the socket and hold it into place with a periodontal splint. This allows the tooth to utilize the strength of your other teeth and regain its strength and structure without experiencing too much force.

For more serious avulsions, we may need to perform a surgical procedure like root canal therapy to facilitate the tooth’s reintegration. We will also likely need to set up a few follow-up visits afterward to ensure the tooth and surrounding area is healing. If you have suffered a chip or crack, we also offer cosmetic services to help with the aesthetics of your smile.
