Root canal therapy is used to treat deep cavities and infected root canals. Patients experiencing pain in their tooth or jaw, swelling of the gums around a sore tooth, or discoloration of the gums around a sore tooth may have a deep cavity or infection.

Implementing root canal therapy, our Jersey City, NJ, doctors can eliminate decay and infection, repairing the affected tooth to restore your oral health. Drs. Haig Rickerby and Flaviu Dunca utilize root canal therapy to target the cause of pain and sensitivity deep within the tooth, eliminating discomfort and preventing the progression of gum disease while infection is in its earliest stages.

What to Expect During Root Canal Therapy

Prior to treatment, you will meet with root canal specialist Dr. Dunca. He will take x-rays of your tooth to determine where the cavity is located, and whether it has caused an infection of the pulp chamber inside the tooth.

With early treatment, we can likely save the majority of your tooth, eliminating the need for more costly, lengthy, or uncomfortable procedures in the future.

Before treatment begins, you will receive a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. Then, the damaged area of the tooth will be gently removed, as well as any damaged tissue. The doctor will then fill the tooth with a rubber-like material known as gutta-percha, pack the pulp chamber with cotton, and seal the tooth.

When you return for your follow-up visit, your doctor will ensure that the infection was effectively eliminated, and check for any complications. He will remove the temporary filling and replace it with a permanent tooth-colored filling that will blend seamlessly with your smile.
